Born 1989
Alex Morgan is an American former soccer forward, author and producer. Born Alexandra Patricia Morgan, she grew up in Diamond Bar, California. Her birthplace is San Dimas. Her memoir recalls childhood with sisters Jenny and Jeri, a father who worked in construction and a mother who returned to graduate study. Soccer shared her time with softball, basketball, volleyball and track. She began club soccer at fourteen, later than many elite players. Her early idols included Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly. As her career accelerated, university work continued alongside national-team travel: she wrote term papers on flights and balanced classes, college matches and international camps. Diamond Bar High School and Cypress Elite preceded California's Golden Bears, where she played from 2007 to 2010. She earned first-team All-American recognition and graduated early with a political economy degree. The progression was not automatic. In a 2008 interview, she described an ACL injury in January 2007 that initially limited her speed and visibility to national-team scouts. Cal coach Neil McGuire helped her prepare and contacted the Under-20 staff. An April camp invitation opened her route into the national pool. Training with McGuire and assistant Brian Zwaschka also developed her ability to receive the ball under pressure near goal. She helped the USA win the 2008 Under-20 World Cup and received its Silver Ball and Bronze Shoe. Her senior international debut came against Mexico on March 31, 2010. Her first senior goal followed against China that October. A stoppage-time winner against Italy then helped secure World Cup qualification. At the 2011 tournament she scored in both the semifinal and final. Western New York Flash drafted her first overall in 2011; she won the WPS title that season. Her club career continued through Sounders Women, Portland Thorns, Orlando Pride, Lyon, Tottenham and San Diego Wave. The Lyon spell brought a league, cup and Champions League treble. The Sounders period came in 2012. She won London Olympic gold and the 2015 and 2019 World Cups. Her final USA record stands at 224 appearances, 123 goals and 53 assists. The Wave chapter brought the 2022 NWSL Golden Boot, 2023 Shield and 2024 Challenge Cup. She retired in September 2024, playing her final match on September 8. Her off-field influence includes advocacy for equal pay. TIME's 2019 profile describes her joining the 2016 federal complaint and agreeing to be named first in the team's 2019 lawsuit, while drawing attention to unequal playing conditions. Writing brought the memoir Breakaway: Beyond the Goal. Saving the Team launched her Kicks novels in 2013. Alex & Me combined acting with co-producing. She executive-produced Copa 71. For the Win: NWSL continued the documentary work. Under Pressure follows her and her national teammates during the 2023 World Cup. She executive-produced the Summer of Gold podcast. The 2026 Gamechangers announcement names her as an executive producer. Her foundation launched in March 2023 to support girls, women and mothers. Its 2026 CVS partnership opened a mini-pitch at Pantera Park in her hometown. An August 2026 interview describes family life, padel, running, strength work and vegetarian eating after professional soccer.
