Alexander Zverev Biography
Alexander Zverev is a German professional tennis player born in Hamburg. His parents Alexander Sr. and Irina were professional players and became coaches; his older brother Mischa also competed on tour. The family moved from Russia to Germany before he was born, and he grew up around tennis in Hamburg. Local tournament history describes the Uhlenhorster HC setting and his early connection with Michael Stich. In a later family interview, Mischa recalled their childhood apartment games using VHS tapes as a makeshift net. Following his brother to junior majors introduced Sascha to tournament life; the family also developed a training base at Saddlebrook in Tampa. He turned professional in 2013, the year he reached junior No.1 and received a Hamburg main-draw wildcard. The Australian Open boys’ championship followed in 2014, alongside his first Challenger title in Braunschweig and a Hamburg tour semifinal. The 2015 ATP newcomer award recognised his emergence before St. Petersburg brought his first senior tour singles title in 2016. His rise accelerated with Masters titles in Rome and Montreal in 2017. At the 2018 ATP Finals he defeated Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in succession to win the season-ending championship. His titles span indoor and outdoor hard courts and clay, from Montpellier and Munich to Paris. In 2021 he won Olympic men’s singles gold in Tokyo and a second ATP Finals title in Turin. A serious ankle injury interrupted his 2022 Roland-Garros semifinal against Rafael Nadal; documentary productions subsequently followed his return. He reached earlier major finals at the 2020 US Open, 2024 Roland-Garros and 2025 Australian Open before winning his first senior major in Paris in June 2026. A US Open championship followed that season. His September Laver Cup win helped seal Team Europe’s title. Doubles titles with Mischa and Marcelo Melo form another part of his career. Away from competition, he established a foundation in 2022 to support children living with type 1 diabetes, which he has publicly discussed as part of his own life. His direct interviews also document his family, partner Sophia Thomalla and life on tour. Screen credits identify appearances as himself rather than acting roles. In his September 2026 ICON interview, he reflected on missing friendships and ordinary teenage experiences to concentrate on tennis; he described the enjoyment of competing, travelling and preparing in the gym as enduring motivations.
