Andrew Garfield

Actor

Born 1983

Andrew Garfield is a British-American actor whose career spans television, film, theatre and audio. Born in Los Angeles to Lynn and Richard Garfield, he moved to Surrey as a child. Acting classes and youth theatre accompanied his school years at Priory Preparatory and City of London Freemen’s. He completed training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in 2004. He moved to London at seventeen for drama school and worked at Starbucks. His first professional acting job was Kes at Manchester’s Royal Exchange, after casting director Camilla Evans saw him during drama-school scouting. He also played Romeo there. London productions and touring followed. He has recalled a period of unemployment and support jobs after drama school, including telemarketing, waiting tables and assisting a cricket coach. A National Theatre performance in Chatroom led to a screen test for an unmade Stephen Daldry film. That tape reached casting director Avy Kaufman and helped open the path to Robert Redford’s Lions for Lambs. Television parts in Sugar Rush and Doctor Who preceded the contrasting screen opportunities of Boy A and Lions for Lambs. Boy A earned a television BAFTA. He moved between Red Riding, fantasy, short films and adaptations before playing Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. Two Amazing Spider-Man films brought a much larger audience. Alongside them, he made his Broadway debut as Biff in Death of a Salesman and later returned to independent film with 99 Homes. His work continued through Silence, Hacksaw Ridge, Breathe and Under the Silver Lake. The two-part Angels in America gave him sustained theatre work in London and on Broadway; its Broadway run brought a Tony and a Drama Desk award. For tick, tick... BOOM!, he undertook extended voice training with Liz Caplan to portray Jonathan Larson. A Golden Globe followed. His later television work included detective Jeb Pyre in Under the Banner of Heaven. After We Live in Time and After the Hunt, his released work includes The Magic Faraway Tree and The Uprising. He portrays Sam Altman in the forthcoming Artificial. Apple also announced him as Roy Horn and an executive producer of Wild Things. Upcoming release expectations remain separate from completed credits. In an August 2026 interview, he described a renewed need for rest after successive projects. He contrasted the intensity of making work with ordinary life away from it. He has discussed grief after his mother’s death in 2019, including baking her chocolate chip cookies and retaining her perfume. Interviews document reading, karaoke and surfing, while production diets are bounded to the roles concerned. Public reporting identifies Monica Barbaro as his partner; his private family life and unverified beauty routines remain undisclosed.
