Aryna Sabalenka Biography

Aryna Sabalenka is a Belarusian professional tennis player born in Minsk. She began playing at six after her father suggested trying tennis. Her childhood was shaped by a close bond with him: a former hockey player who ran a car-repair business, he encouraged her without insisting that she continue. She nearly gave up as a child before finding enjoyment in the sport again. Her mother emphasized education, and watching her father recover from business setbacks left a lasting impression on her. Her early career progressed from the ITF circuit to Wimbledon and a first tour final at Tianjin. Mumbai brought a WTA 125 singles title. New Haven became her first tour singles championship in 2018. Doubles opened another route to major success: with Elise Mertens she won the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open. A WTA Finals championship match followed. The next stage required rebuilding her confidence during a difficult period with her serve. In a later direct interview she described learning to keep competing even when that shot faltered. Her first singles major arrived at the 2023 Australian Open, followed by her first singles No. 1 ranking. She defended her Melbourne title in 2024 and won consecutive US Opens in 2024 and 2025. Further major finals followed. Her honours include WTA Newcomer of the Year, consecutive WTA Player of the Year awards, ITF World Champion recognition and the 2026 Laureus Sportswoman award. The 2026 spring added Indian Wells and Miami, completing a singles Sunshine Double alongside her earlier doubles achievement. She lost the September US Open final to Elena Rybakina, who had already secured the top ranking before they met. At the October review, Sabalenka is ranked No. 2 and has qualified for a sixth consecutive WTA Finals; she is still seeking her first title there. Her work beyond competition includes Netflix’s Break Point and Aryna’s Arena, a video series launched in July 2025 and produced by Hana Kuma. It follows tour life with her team; a later training episode examines tennis-specific conditioning and food preparation. She also walked at Vogue World Milano in September 2026. Away from matches, interviews document her reading, music and food preferences. She publicly announced her engagement to Georgios Frangulis in March 2026, and introduced her puppy Ash that spring.
