Cate Blanchett

Actor and producer

Born 1969

Cate Blanchett is an Australian actor and producer born in Melbourne. After graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, she began a professional career in Australian theatre. Her early stage work included Kafka Dances, whose performance brought recognition from Sydney’s theatre critics. Elizabeth established her internationally as a leading screen actor through her portrayal of the young English queen. Her screen work ranges across historical drama, intimate character studies, comedy and fantasy. As Galadriel, she connects the worlds of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Martin Scorsese directed her as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator, with Blanchett approaching the performance as part of his film rather than a standalone impersonation. That performance earned her the Academy Award for Supporting Actress. Todd Haynes cast her as one of the imagined versions of Bob Dylan in I’m Not There. Haynes directed her in Carol. Blue Jasmine brought her the Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role. Tár required her to embody a fictional conductor whose public authority and private conduct collide. She prepared with conductor Natalie Murray Beale and returned to piano study while developing the role. Alongside her screen career, she and Andrew Upton co-led Sydney Theatre Company. Her stage repertoire includes Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Yelena in Uncle Vanya and Lotte in Gross und Klein. The Present took her stage work to Broadway, while The Seagull later brought her to London as Arkadina. Her television work includes Stateless, which she co-created, co-executive produced and appeared in. Disclaimer continued her television career as Catherine Ravenscroft and earned an Emmy nomination. Through Dirty Films, the Proof of Concept programme and the Displacement Film Fund, she supports film production and opportunities for underrepresented and displaced filmmakers. Recent films include Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag and Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother. Her subsequent stage work includes Benedict Andrews’ Electra / Persona at the National Theatre, alongside Nina Hoss and Ella Lily Hyland. Oxford appointed her Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre for the 2026–27 academic year. The Japan Art Association named her its 2026 Praemium Imperiale laureate in Theatre/Film, with the award ceremony scheduled for later October.
