Denzel Washington Biography

Denzel Washington is an American actor, director and producer born in Mount Vernon, New York, whose screen career spans historical drama, romance and action. He has recalled discovering the possibility of acting through a talent show while working at a summer camp, before pursuing theatre at Fordham. He graduated from Fordham in 1977 and moved from stage work in A Soldier’s Play to television’s St. Elsewhere. His leading roles include Malcolm X, Philadelphia, The Hurricane, American Gangster and Flight, alongside collaborations with Spike Lee, Jonathan Demme, Ridley Scott and Antoine Fuqua. Glory brought an Academy Award for a supporting performance, while Training Day earned him the leading-actor award, reflecting the range between ensemble historical drama and a contemporary crime thriller. He also directed and starred in Antwone Fisher, The Great Debaters and the film adaptation of Fences. Broadway remains part of his career: he won a Tony for Fences, played Walter Lee Younger in A Raisin in the Sun and returned as Othello in 2025. As a producer, he has helped bring August Wilson’s plays to the screen through Fences, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Piano Lesson, directed by his son Malcolm Washington. Later screen work includes The Tragedy of Macbeth and Gladiator II. Highest 2 Lowest reunited him with Spike Lee for their fifth film together, casting him as a music mogul caught in a ransom dilemma. Cannes presented him with an honorary Palme d’Or in May 2025. His mentorship commitments include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and support for theatre students at Fordham. Washington has described Sidney Poitier’s guidance early in his career, including advice to wait for work he felt was right for him.
