Dwayne Johnson

Actor, producer, entrepreneur and professional wrestler

Born 1972

Dwayne Johnson is an American actor, producer, entrepreneur and professional wrestler whose career has repeatedly crossed the boundaries between sport and popular entertainment. Born in Hayward, California, and raised across the United States and New Zealand in a wrestling family, he played defensive tackle at the University of Miami before a brief Canadian Football League stint ended his professional-football ambitions. He entered the WWF in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, remade the hostile audience response into the charismatic Rock persona and became one of the defining performers of the Attitude Era, winning eight WWE Championships and the 2000 Royal Rumble. Johnson used The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King to begin a screen career that later ranged from Fast Five, Ballers and the modern Jumanji films to Moana, Black Adam and The Smashing Machine. With Dany Garcia he co-founded Seven Bucks Productions, extending his work into producing, television and business; in 2024 he joined the board of WWE parent TKO and received ownership of the Rock name. The Smashing Machine brought his first Golden Globe acting nomination, while 2026 added a live-action return as Maui, the original song “Your Dad,” induction as a Disney Legend and the forthcoming Jumanji: Open World. His public record also includes the memoir The Rock Says, three daughters, a long marriage to singer-producer Lauren Hashian and an unusually direct body of interviews about family, training, grooming and creative reinvention.
