Idris Elba

Actor, director and musician

Born 1972

Idris Elba is a British actor, director and musician born in London in 1972. His father, Winston, came from Sierra Leone and worked at Ford’s Dagenham plant; his mother, Eve, came from Ghana. Childhood in Hackney and Canning Town brought him to school drama, where a teacher encouraged his interest in performing. Work building scenery at Barking Town Hall developed his familiarity with theatre. He subsequently trained with the National Youth Music Theatre, supported by the Prince’s Trust. Music was another early route into performance. His uncle ran a sound system, and Elba helped at weddings and christenings before developing his own DJ work. In his Fresh Air interview, he recalled listening to African music through his father and admiring reggae singer Gregory Isaacs. Theatre and British television work preceded his move into American roles. The Wire cast him as Stringer Bell after an extended audition process, building a character very different from his own London background. Ultraviolet gave him the recurring role of Vaughan Rice. Luther later placed him at the centre of a British detective series as DCI John Luther. Cinema expanded that range with Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Beasts of No Nation cast him as the Commandant. His studio work includes Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. Recognition has followed work on both sides of the camera: the Television Academy’s current record includes acting nominations for Luther and Hijack, narration for Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color, and a producing nomination for Heads of State. Directing Yardie in 2018 joined his film and musical interests. He had read Victor Headley’s novel as a teenager and remembered its effect on him. Discussing the adaptation at Sundance, Elba described choosing to concentrate on directing rather than taking an acting role in the film. His music career continued alongside the screen work. The 2014 mi Mandela project drew on South African and Malian music, with his father’s encouragement part of its personal background. His DJ Mag interview traced a listening history from London sound systems through American hip-hop and R&B to deep house. With Sabrina Dhowre Elba, his wife, he developed Coupledom and co-founded S’ABLE Labs. The 2026 New Year Honours recognised his services to young people with a knighthood. Hijack returned in January 2026, retaining Elba as Sam Nelson and executive producer while moving its central crisis to a Berlin train. Netflix has also announced another Luther feature, reuniting him with Ruth Wilson and Dermot Crowley. Its release date remains unannounced. Above the Below, which he co-directs with Martin Owen, has a studio-listed December 2026 release ahead. His October 2026 music catalogue includes Pon Time Again (Club Remixes), continuing the musical strand of his career.
