Luis Fonsi

Singer, songwriter and actor

Born 1978

Luis Fonsi is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter born in San Juan on April 15, 1978. His early training included four years with the San Juan Children’s Choir, where he learned music theory and solfège. His family later moved to Orlando, bringing his musical interests into a new school environment. At Dr. Phillips High School, teacher Keith Galasso encouraged his singing. He performed with friends in the group Big Guys, which included future NSYNC member Joey Fatone. A full scholarship took him to Florida State University in 1995 to study vocal performance. Choir travel and demo recordings helped lead toward his first recording contract and the 1998 debut Comenzaré. He began writing Despacito with Erika Ender in 2015, before Daddy Yankee joined the recording’s development. In a retrospective interview, he described refusing a proposed salsa contract because he wanted to pursue his own pop songs and ballads. A later opportunity with Eddie Fernández at Universal Music Latin better matched those ambitions. He also recalled the confidence music gave him while adjusting to English-speaking classmates, and the lasting friendships formed during those years. His recorded career includes the English-language Fight the Feeling. Palabras del Silencio followed in 2008. Aquí Estoy Yo brought a Latin GRAMMY Song of the Year win in 2009. In 2017, Despacito and its remix received four Latin GRAMMY honours across song, record, video and urban performance categories. After Hurricane Maria, he joined fellow musicians in supporting relief and rebuilding work in Puerto Rico, including the La Perla neighbourhood. His public charitable work also includes St. Jude’s Thanks and Giving campaign, whose artist biography identifies him as an ambassador since 2008. For El Viaje, city names became the organising idea after the first two songs suggested an unexpected connection. He described the project as a musical journey shaped by places and memories, rather than a predetermined formula. His early television roles include Joseph in Taina and Roy in Corazones al límite. Screen work includes voicing the lead character in Capitán Avispa. He plays Rafael Reza in Say a Little Prayer. He also has an executive-producer credit on City of Dreams. Publishing added Amigos ExtraordiRANArios, a children’s story coauthored with Barry Waldo. The project began during the pandemic and is separate from any claim about his favourite reading. His public family life includes his marriage to model Águeda López. Their children Mikaela and Rocco helped inspire his interest in children’s storytelling. In 2026, he joined the Spanish La Voz Kids coaching panel, describing his interest in voices that create an emotional connection. In February 2026, he discussed taking another creative turn with the Feid collaboration Cambiaré. Me Despido followed that August. A remix with Dalvin La Melodía was released on September 25, 2026. A reported February 2027 Puerto Rico tour opening remains a future plan as of this profile’s October 2 review.
