Sandra Bullock

Actor, producer and filmmaker

Born 1964

Sandra Bullock is an American actor and producer whose career spans action films, romantic comedies, ensemble dramas and thrillers. The daughter of an opera singer and a voice coach, she spent part of her childhood in Germany and later studied acting at East Carolina University. The university archive documents her performances in Stage Door, Three Sisters and Peter Pan. After leaving college, she moved to New York, took acting classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse and supported herself through waitressing and bartending. She later told Vogue that watching physical comedy while growing up in Germany shaped her childhood ambition to become a comedian. Early screen work included Hangmen and the television comedy Working Girl. Speed made her a major film star, followed by While You Were Sleeping, The Net and Miss Congeniality; Murder by Numbers later combined a detective role with an executive producer credit. She also developed a producing career through Fortis Films and wrote, directed and starred in the short Making Sandwiches, shown at Sundance in 1997. She won the leading-actress Oscar for The Blind Side and received another nomination for Gravity. Her later films include Ocean's 8, Bird Box, The Unforgivable and The Lost City. In 2026 she returned as Sally Owens and a producer in Practical Magic 2, reuniting with Nicole Kidman; the studio scheduled its North American theatrical release for September 11.
