Born 1971
Thalía is a Mexican singer, actress and author, born in Mexico City on August 26, 1971. Her work crosses pop recordings, television melodrama, children’s publishing and screen production.
The youngest of five sisters, she describes a childhood shaped by her mother and grandmother after her father died when she was six. Away from performances, she remembers riding bicycles and climbing trees with neighbourhood friends.
Before Timbiriche, her childhood performing career included Din-Din. Discussing Mixtape in 2023, she described revisiting the Spanish-language rock she had listened to as a teenager, bringing its original artists together with a younger generation of collaborators. David Summers participated in the project, while Kenia Os joined her interpretation of Para No Verte Más.
Her mother supported her performance ambitions from childhood. A role in Vaselina led to an invitation from producer Luis de Llano to join Timbiriche, where demanding classes with Julissa and Martha Zabaleta helped develop her stage discipline. In a later Vogue interview, she remembered the contrast between solitary childhood play and learning to perform within a group.
She belonged to Timbiriche from 1986 to 1989, then issued her first solo album in 1990. En Éxtasis followed in 1995, marking another stage of her solo career.
Her television career includes the title role in María Mercedes. She then played Marimar Pérez in Marimar. María la del Barrio added María Hernández to that run of leading roles.
Her memoir Cada Día Más Fuerte preceded Chupi, a children’s story inspired by her daughter’s relationship with a pacifier. Publishing extended her work beyond music and acting without turning those authored books into a claim about her favourite reading.
For Thalia’s Mixtape: El Soundtrack de Mi Vida, she became creator, executive producer and on-screen guide. The project traces formative Spanish-language rock and pop through encounters with artists whose music mattered to her. She also worked as a producer of Latin Music Queens, the 2020 series connecting her with Sofía Reyes and Farina.
In 2026, Todo Suena Mejor En Cumbia brought another change in musical direction. She explained how an invitation from Los Ángeles Azules helped spark the project, rather than presenting cumbia as a sudden interest detached from her earlier career.
The official credits for Todo Suena Mejor En Cumbia also identify her songwriting: Ojitos Mexicanos names her as writer, and Nueva Herida and Cariño Mío list her among their co-writers. She shares the album’s creative direction and design credit with Maria P. Marulanda. An accompanying documentary arrived on her official channel in May 2026, introducing the memories and collaborations behind that album.
That April, Billboard Women in Music recognised her with its Icon honour.
Her public family life includes her marriage to Tommy Mottola. In a 2024 interview, she emphasised mutual respect and room for each person’s independence.
