Tom Hiddleston

Actor and producer

Born 1981

Tom Hiddleston is a British actor and producer whose career joins classical theatre, literary adaptation, television drama and franchise films. Born in Westminster, London, to Diana and James Hiddleston, he attended the Dragon School and Eton before studying Classics at Cambridge. Before Cambridge, he performed in Journey’s End at Edinburgh; his family’s response made acting seem a serious possibility. At school he had initially been more drawn to rugby than drama. Strong results in Latin, Greek, English and theatre studies took him to university, where a production of A Streetcar Named Desire brought him to the attention of Hamilton Hodell. He subsequently trained at RADA, graduating in 2005. Early television included Nicholas Nickleby and Conspiracy, followed by The Gathering Storm. Joanna Hogg cast him as Oakley in Unrelated, with Archipelago continuing that collaboration. His theatre work developed alongside screen performances: Cymbeline earned an Olivier newcomer award, Othello placed him at the Donmar, and Ivanov brought another classical role. That stage foundation continued through the title roles in Coriolanus and Hamlet. Thor introduced his Loki in 2011. The character returned in the Avengers films and later led the television series Loki, where Hiddleston also became an executive producer. His other film performances range from F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris and a cavalry officer in War Horse to Adam in Only Lovers Left Alive. Crimson Peak, High-Rise, I Saw the Light and Kong: Skull Island added gothic drama, social satire, musical biography and adventure. Animation supplied contrasting roles in The Pirate Fairy and Early Man. Television offered longer dramatic arcs. Wallander and Cranford preceded Shakespeare’s Prince Hal and Henry V in The Hollow Crown. The Night Manager cast him as Jonathan Pine and earned him a Golden Globe, alongside Emmy nominations for acting and executive production. The Essex Serpent continued his work in literary adaptation. He returned as Pine for the second Night Manager series in 2026. Stage work remained central after his screen breakthrough. Betrayal moved from London to Broadway and brought a Tony nomination. In 2025, he played Benedick opposite Hayley Atwell in Jamie Lloyd’s Much Ado About Nothing; a Broadway engagement has been announced for fall 2026. Audio performance includes narration of The Red Necklace. UNICEF UK also documents his ambassador work, including visits to Guinea and South Sudan. Recent screen work includes The Life of Chuck and the National Geographic investigation Pompeii: Out of Time, which he hosted and executive produced. He traces his interest in the ancient world to learning Latin as a child and exploring Greek myths. In September 2026, Zurich Film Festival honoured his career with its Golden Eye award. Tenzing, in which he portrays Edmund Hillary, has announced October 2026 cinema and streaming dates. Avengers: Doomsday remains upcoming. Away from professional roles, checked interviews document reading, cooking, running and music choices. He and Zawe Ashton have publicly acknowledged their partnership and family while keeping many personal details private.
