Dutta’s Refugee launched her opposite Abhishek Bachchan in 2000 and brought a Filmfare debut award. A busy first decade ranged from Pooja in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to the title role in Chameli, Aaliya in Dev and Dolly in Omkara. Veere Di Wedding and Good Newwz extended the ensemble-comedy strand. In a 2023 interview she described deliberately balancing commercial films with more concentrated character work.
